If you have retirement savings sitting in a 401(k) or existing IRA, a Gold IRA rollover lets you move some or all of those funds into physical gold without paying taxes or penalties. Done correctly through a direct rollover, the entire process is tax-free, straightforward, and typically completed within two to three weeks.
This guide covers exactly what a Gold IRA rollover is, how it works step by step, the IRS rules you must follow, what it costs, which accounts are eligible, and how to choose the right company to help you through it.

A Gold IRA rollover is the process of moving funds from an existing retirement account into a self-directed IRA (SDIRA) that holds physical gold and other IRS-approved precious metals. It is the most common way investors fund a Gold IRA, since most people already have retirement savings in a 401(k), Traditional IRA, or Roth IRA rather than starting fresh with new annual contributions.
Gold has had a historic run. According to the World Gold Council, gold achieved over 50 all-time highs in 2025 and returned more than 60% for the year. Gold reached an all-time high of $5,589 per ounce in January 2026 before settling around $4,564 per ounce by May 2026, according to IndexBox market data.
Morgan Stanley Research revised its 2026 gold price forecast upward to $4,400 per ounce, citing strong central bank demand, ETF inflows, and geopolitical uncertainty as primary drivers. J.P. Morgan projects gold could push toward $5,000 per ounce by the fourth quarter of 2026.
Central banks purchased approximately 1,000 tonnes of gold per year from 2022 through 2025, compared to roughly 200 tonnes per year in the prior decade, according to J.P. Morgan Global Research. This structural shift in demand has underpinned gold's long-term price trajectory.
From 1971, when the US abandoned the gold standard, through 2025, gold rose from $35 per ounce to over $5,000 while the US dollar lost approximately 87% of its purchasing power, per Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI data cited by GBI Direct.
VanEck research noted that as of late 2025, gold had more than doubled the returns of the S&P 500 Index over the prior 12 months.
These factors combined have driven a significant increase in Gold IRA rollover activity in 2026 as retirement investors look beyond traditional stocks and bonds for their retirement portfolios.
This is the most important distinction to understand before initiating any rollover.
In a direct rollover, funds move directly from your existing retirement account custodian to your new Gold IRA custodian. You never personally receive the money. Because the funds do not pass through your hands, the IRS does not treat it as a distribution. No taxes apply, no early withdrawal penalty applies, and there is no 60-day deadline to worry about. This is confirmed under IRC Section 402(c) and IRS Publication 590-A.
In an indirect rollover, your existing account pays the funds out to you first. For 401(k) plans, the plan administrator is required under IRC Section 3405(c) to withhold 20% for federal taxes before issuing the check. You then have 60 days to deposit the full pre-withholding amount into your new Gold IRA. If you miss the 60-day window, the full amount becomes taxable ordinary income plus a 10% early withdrawal penalty under IRC Section 72(t) if you are under age 59.5.
If you request an indirect rollover of $100,000 from a 401(k), your plan administrator withholds $20,000 for taxes and sends you $80,000. To complete the rollover without penalties, you must deposit the full $100,000 into your new Gold IRA within 60 days, meaning you must cover the $20,000 withheld from personal funds. Miss the deadline and $100,000 becomes fully taxable income, potentially adding $22,000 to $37,000 in federal tax depending on your bracket, plus a $10,000 early withdrawal penalty.
| Feature | Direct Rollover | Indirect Rollover |
|---|---|---|
| Funds pass through you | No | Yes |
| 60-day deadline | No | Yes |
| 20% mandatory withholding (401k) | No | Yes |
| One-per-year limit | No | Yes |
| Tax risk | None | High if deadline missed |
| Recommended method | Yes | No |
The recommendation is unambiguous: always use a direct rollover.
The following accounts qualify for a Gold IRA rollover, confirmed under the IRS rollover eligibility chart:
Two critical restrictions apply. First, Required Minimum Distributions cannot be rolled over. If you are 73 or older, take your RMD for the year before initiating any rollover. Second, you cannot roll personally owned gold into an IRA even if it meets all purity standards. This constitutes a prohibited self-dealing transaction under IRC Section 4975.
Select a reputable Gold IRA company with a verified track record. Check their rating at the Better Business Bureau and Business Consumer Alliance. Also verify the company's representatives through FINRA BrokerCheck. All companies reviewed on our Gold IRA Companies Comparison page carry an A+ BBB rating and AAA BCA rating.

The Gold IRA company sets up a self-directed IRA with an IRS-approved custodian. Commonly used custodians include Equity Trust Company, STRATA Trust Company, and New Direction IRA. You provide government-issued ID, Social Security number, and beneficiary information. Most accounts are approved within 1 to 2 business days.
Contact your existing 401(k) plan administrator or IRA custodian and request a direct rollover to your new Gold IRA custodian. Most Gold IRA companies handle the rollover paperwork on your behalf and coordinate directly with your existing account provider. Your existing custodian liquidates any positions if needed and wires the funds.
For IRA-to-IRA direct rollovers, funds typically arrive within 5 to 7 business days. For 401(k) rollovers, the process takes 10 to 14 business days depending on the plan administrator. Some employer plans with mailed checks can take up to 3 weeks.
Once funds arrive, you work with the Gold IRA company's order desk to choose IRS-approved metals. Verify the live spot price at Kitco or GoldPrice.org before agreeing to any purchase. The price is quoted and locked during a recorded confirmation call. Request the dealer spread in writing before approving any transaction. The CFTC advises that fair markups on standard bullion run approximately 5% to 10% above spot.
IRS-approved gold products include:
Metals are shipped directly to an IRS-approved depository under your account name. You cannot take personal possession while the metals remain inside the IRA, as confirmed in McNulty v. Commissioner, 157 T.C. No. 10 (2021), where home storage was ruled a fully taxable distribution resulting in over $268,000 in taxes and penalties.

Total timeline: 10 to 21 business days on average.
Direct rollover rules. Direct rollovers from employer plans to IRAs are non-taxable under IRC Section 402(c). Direct IRA-to-IRA rollovers are non-taxable under IRC Section 408 and IRS Publication 590-A.
60-day rollover rule. Applies to indirect rollovers only. Funds must be re-deposited within 60 days per IRS Publication 590-A. Missing the deadline converts the full amount to taxable income plus a 10% penalty under IRC Section 72(t).
One-rollover-per-year rule. Per Revenue Ruling 2014-32, investors are limited to one indirect IRA-to-IRA rollover per 12-month period across all IRA accounts. This rule does not apply to direct rollovers from employer plans.
IRS purity standards. Under IRC Section 408(m)(3): gold minimum 99.5% (American Gold Eagle excepted at 91.67%), silver 99.9%, platinum 99.95%, palladium 99.95%. Collectibles prohibited under IRC Section 408(m)(1).
Storage requirement. All metals must be held at an IRS-approved depository under IRC Section 408(m). Home storage is a prohibited transaction confirmed by the Tax Court in McNulty v. Commissioner (2021).
2026 contribution limits. Per IRS retirement contribution limits: $7,000 per year for investors under 50, $8,000 for those 50 and older. Rollovers are not counted against this limit. Use our Gold IRA Tax Calculator to understand the tax implications for your situation.

Yes. You can roll over a portion of your existing retirement account into a Gold IRA without moving the full balance. The World Gold Council has published research noting that some investors allocate 5% to 15% of a retirement portfolio to precious metals as part of a broader strategy. Partial rollovers let you add gold exposure while keeping the remainder invested in equities, bonds, or other assets.
No, provided you use a direct rollover. The IRS does not treat a direct rollover as a distribution under IRS Publication 590-A, so no income tax and no early withdrawal penalty apply. The rollover amount is also not counted against your annual IRA contribution limit.
The only scenario where a Gold IRA rollover becomes taxable is if you use an indirect rollover and miss the 60-day window, or if you violate the one-rollover-per-year rule. Use our Gold IRA Tax Calculator to model the tax impact under different rollover scenarios.

Choosing an indirect rollover when a direct rollover is available. The 20% mandatory withholding and 60-day window on indirect rollovers create unnecessary risk. Always request a direct rollover.
Missing the 60-day window. The IRS rarely grants waivers. Per IRS Publication 590-A, the full amount becomes taxable if the deadline is missed.
Violating the one-rollover-per-year rule. Per Revenue Ruling 2014-32, this applies across all IRA accounts combined. A second indirect rollover within 12 months triggers full taxation.
Rolling over an RMD. If you are 73 or older, take your Required Minimum Distribution before initiating any rollover. See our Gold IRA RMD Calculator for RMD estimates.
Purchasing non-IRS-eligible metals. Collectibles and sub-purity metals are prohibited under IRC Section 408(m). Any prohibited purchase is treated as a full taxable distribution and can disqualify the entire account.
Attempting home storage. Confirmed illegal in McNulty v. Commissioner (2021). Always confirm your specific depository and verify it is IRS-approved.
Overpaying on dealer spreads. Check live spot prices at Kitco and request the markup in writing. The CFTC warns that fraudulent dealers have charged spreads of 51% to 130%. Read our Gold IRA Scams guide for the full red flags list.
Yes. A direct rollover from a 401(k) to a Gold IRA is completely tax-free and penalty-free as long as funds move directly between custodians without passing through your hands.
An IRA direct rollover typically takes 10 to 14 business days. A 401(k) rollover typically takes 14 to 21 business days.
No. There is no IRS limit on rollover amounts. The annual contribution limit of $7,000 (or $8,000 if age 50 or older) applies only to new annual contributions, not rollovers.
Most employer plans restrict in-service rollovers while you are still employed. Some plans allow partial rollovers after age 59.5. Confirm directly with your plan administrator.
The World Gold Council has published research noting that some investors allocate 5% to 15% of a retirement portfolio to precious metals. Consult a financial advisor to determine what allocation, if any, is appropriate for your situation.
A direct rollover is not a taxable event under IRS Publication 590-A. Use our Gold IRA Tax Calculator to model how distributions from a Gold IRA will be taxed at retirement.
