Augusta Precious Metals and American Hartford Gold are two of the most frequently compared Gold IRA companies in the United States. Both hold an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau and an AAA rating from the Business Consumer Alliance. Both work with Equity Trust as a custodian, both assign a dedicated account representative to every customer, and both include free shipping and transit insurance on orders.
The differences show up in three areas that tend to matter most: the minimum you need to open an account, the metals each company offers, and how their fee structures are built. This comparison lays out the verified figures side by side so you can see which company lines up with your situation.

This is the clearest dividing line between the two companies.
Augusta Precious Metals requires a $50,000 minimum to open a Gold IRA. That figure applies to both new accounts and rollovers. The company positions itself around long-term and retirement-focused savers, and the minimum reflects that focus.
American Hartford Gold sets its Gold IRA rollover minimum at $10,000. For cash purchases outside an IRA, the minimum is $5,000. The lower entry point makes AHG accessible to a wider range of account sizes, including first-time precious metals buyers.
If you are working with less than $50,000, Augusta is not a fit and American Hartford Gold becomes the practical option of the two. If your account is well above that threshold, both companies are open to you and the decision moves to other factors.
Augusta Precious Metals offers gold and silver. Its IRA-eligible lineup includes IRS-approved coins such as American Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs, the Austrian Philharmonic, and the American Buffalo, along with gold bars from accredited refiners including Credit Suisse, PAMP, and Johnson Matthey.
Platinum is the single metals difference between the two: American Hartford Gold supports it, Augusta does not. Neither company offers palladium.
American Hartford Gold offers gold, silver, and platinum. It does not offer palladium. Its gold lineup includes the American Gold Eagle, American Gold Buffalo, and Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, plus gold bars at .995 fineness or higher. Platinum is available through the American Platinum Eagle at .9995 fineness.
The practical takeaway: if platinum is part of what you want to hold, American Hartford Gold supports it and Augusta does not. Neither company offers palladium.
Custodian fee plus storage fee, by account size
Bars scaled on a shared axis so the tier change is visible. Augusta holds a flat $200 per year. AHG runs lower on smaller accounts and higher on accounts over $100,000. Fee waiver programs are not reflected here.
Both companies publish straightforward fee structures, but they are built differently.
Augusta Precious Metals charges a one-time $50 custodian application fee. After that, the recurring cost is $100 per year for custodian maintenance plus $100 per year for storage, for $200 annually. Augusta also runs a fee waiver program that can cover setup, custodian, and storage fees for up to 10 years, and the company states that everyone qualifies. Shipping and transit insurance are free to all customers.
American Hartford Gold charges $0 in setup fees on its end, though the custodian (Equity Trust) applies its own $50 one-time application fee. The annual custodian fee is tiered: $75 per year for accounts valued at $100,000 or less, and $125 per year for accounts valued over $100,000. Storage runs $100 per year for standard non-segregated storage. That puts the typical recurring total in the range of about $175 to $225 per year. AHG waives first-year fees on IRA purchases of $50,000 or more, and waives the first three years of fees on purchases of $100,000 or more.
One difference worth noting on promotions: American Hartford Gold has offered promotional free silver of up to $10,000 to $15,000 on qualifying purchases, with terms that change periodically. Augusta does not run free silver promotions and instead emphasizes documented pricing with no added gimmicks.
Augusta Precious Metals discloses its spread in writing within its transaction agreement. The spread is the gap between the price you pay and the price you would receive on a sellback. Augusta quotes prices through a recorded confirmation call and states there are no hidden spreads.
American Hartford Gold does not publish product prices online. Prices are quoted in real time by a specialist over the phone. Per third-party analysis, AHG bullion spreads run roughly 3% to 5% above spot for gold and 8% to 12% for silver, with premium coins carrying higher spreads. AHG also offers a price match guarantee, stating it will meet or beat a verified competitor price.
If having pricing documented in writing before you commit is a priority, Augusta's approach is more transparent on paper. If you value a price match guarantee, that feature is specific to AHG.
Augusta Precious Metals centers its education on a one-on-one web conference led by Devlyn Steele, a Harvard-trained economic analyst who serves as the company's Director of Education. It also provides a free gold IRA guide, educational videos, spot price charts, and lifetime account support.
American Hartford Gold provides a free 25-page gold and silver investor guide, market news articles, live price charts for gold, silver, and platinum, and one-on-one consultations with a dedicated specialist by phone. Support is available by phone, email, and live chat, with in-person meetings available at its California and Florida offices.
Both companies assign a dedicated representative. Augusta's model is fully phone-based with no online account setup. American Hartford Gold offers a partial online process, with an intake form to start and a specialist to complete the account.
Both companies hold an A+ rating from the BBB and an AAA rating from the Business Consumer Alliance.
Augusta Precious Metals has been in business since 2012, carries a 4.8 Trustpilot rating, and provides $1 billion in all-risk insurance with its storage. Its preferred depository is the Delaware Depository, with additional locations available across the United States.
