What is an RMD?
The minimum amount the IRS requires you to withdraw from your traditional or Gold IRA each year once you reach the required age.
👤
Who does it apply to?
Anyone aged 73 or older with a traditional IRA, Gold IRA, SEP IRA, or 401(k). Roth IRAs are not subject to RMDs during the owner's lifetime.
Why does it matter?
Missing the deadline triggers an IRS penalty of up to 25% of the amount not withdrawn. Planning ahead gives you time to coordinate with your custodian.
Example: Age 75, $250,000 Balance, Gold IRA

IRS Formula
$250,000 ÷ 24.6 = $10,163
The IRS assigns a life expectancy factor of 24.6 to age 75 under Uniform Lifetime Table III (IRS Publication 590-B). Dividing your year-end balance by that factor gives your minimum required withdrawal.

Missed RMD Penalty: If this $10,163 distribution was not taken by the deadline, the IRS excise tax would be $2,541 (25% of the shortfall). Under SECURE 2.0, this may be reduced to $1,016 (10%) if corrected within two years.

Gold IRA Note: Physical metals cannot be fractionally withdrawn. You may need to liquidate holdings for cash or take an in-kind distribution (physical metal equal in value to your RMD). Confirm both options with your custodian before the deadline.

For informational use only. Under the SECURE 2.0 Act (2023), the required beginning date for RMDs depends on your birth year: age 73 if born between 1951 and 1959, or age 75 if born in 1960 or later. This calculator applies IRS Uniform Lifetime Table III (IRS Publication 590-B), which applies to most account owners. Inherited IRAs and certain employer plan rules differ.

The calculator will apply the correct IRS table and return your estimated RMD, monthly equivalent, life expectancy factor, and maximum penalty exposure if the distribution is missed. All results are for illustrative purposes only. This tool does not constitute tax or legal advice, and your actual RMD obligation may differ based on your specific circumstances.

What Happens If You Miss Your RMD

The IRS imposes an excise tax of 25% on any amount that was required to be distributed but was not withdrawn by the deadline. Under the SECURE 2.0 Act, that penalty may be reduced to 10% if the shortfall is corrected within two years. For a Gold IRA specifically, missing an RMD carries an added layer of complexity because your account holds physical metals rather than cash. You cannot withdraw a fraction of a gold coin. You will either need to liquidate enough metal to cover the required amount or arrange an in-kind distribution with your custodian, where physical metal equal in value to your RMD is transferred out of the account. Both options require advance planning, so confirming the process with your custodian well before the deadline is important.

RMD Deadlines: What You Need to Know

For most account holders, the RMD deadline is December 31 of each year. There is one exception: if you are taking your very first RMD at age 73, the IRS allows you to delay that first distribution until April 1 of the following year. However, choosing to delay means you will need to take two distributions in that second year, which increases your taxable income for that year. Whether to delay or take it on time depends on your overall tax situation and is a decision best made with a qualified tax advisor.

Compare Gold IRA Providers Before You Withdraw

Your RMD amount is one part of the picture. The other part is making sure your custodian handles distributions efficiently, whether that means liquidating metal, arranging in-kind transfers, or processing cash distributions. Not all Gold IRA providers handle this equally well, and annual fees, storage arrangements, and buyback policies vary significantly across companies.

The providers below have been independently researched by the Gold IRA Compare Team. Our evaluation covers custodian and storage fees, Trustpilot and BCA ratings, minimum investment thresholds, buyback programs, and account support quality. Frequently Asked Questions

At what age do RMDs begin?

Under the SECURE 2.0 Act, RMDs begin at age 73 if you were born between 1951 and 1959, and at age 75 if you were born in 1960 or later.

Do Roth IRAs have RMDs?

No. Roth IRAs are not subject to RMDs during the account owner's lifetime. However, inherited Roth IRAs are subject to distribution rules for most non-spouse beneficiaries.

Does a Gold IRA follow the same RMD rules as a traditional IRA?

Yes. A Gold IRA is a type of traditional IRA and follows the same RMD rules. The key difference is that distributions must be coordinated with your custodian since the account holds physical metals rather than cash.

What if I have multiple IRAs?

If you hold more than one traditional IRA, your total RMD is calculated across all accounts combined, but you may withdraw the full amount from any one account or split it across accounts as you choose.

Can I take more than my RMD in a given year?

Yes. The RMD is the minimum required. You may always withdraw more, though additional withdrawals above the minimum will be included in your taxable income for that year.
